Turtleneck (old - J Crew Factory); Jacket (old - Forever 21); Shorts (old - Forever 21); Booties (Purchased at Thread); Bag (Zara - Purchased in Montreal)

What She Says:

When it comes to basic black, it's easy to throw together tried and true pieces like a black turtleneck and  pair with shorts, tights, and boots to tie it all together for a fall ensemble.  In this case, it was a middle of the week trip to THE Ohio State University and the Newport Music Hall.  Another trend for Fall is a "barely there" eye void of liner and shadow, a strong brow, and a red lip.   The bright lip makes it look fancy without the hassle.  Check out Maybelline's new matte collection, I am wearing the shade 690 Siren in Scarlet.

What He Says:

Ah, basic black.  An old friend.  I occasionally branch out into other colors like blue, red, umm…gray?  But nothing beats black.  In fact, you know what is the new black?  BLACK!  It looks good on everybody and my ol' lady is no exception.  She can wear shade 690…691, whatever it takes…and make it look good.  As we stepped out for the evening, I suggested that maybe she was a little overdressed for the Newport (great music venue, but you couldn't pay me to walk barefoot in there), and I was told "I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed."  Touche'.

In case you're wondering, the show that night was Annie Clark (AKA St. Vincent), and she's friggin' amazing live.  One foot is planted in geeky roots, and the other is firmly planted in arena rock stardom.  There was a lot of writhing on stage, but I was OK with that.  Who doesn't love a little writhing?  It worked for Jim Morrison.  Clark is from Tulsa, which is also Allie's hometown, so I am obligated to like everyone from that city:  J.J. Cale, Gary Busey, Amber Valletta, Tony Randall, Anita Bryant and, whoa…not so fast there, Chris Gaines!
